Pet Licensing

Pet Licensing in Toronto

Toronto local laws mandate dogs and cats living in Toronto be licensed and have their licensure tag attached to their collar at all times. Licensing tags for pets contain Toronto Animal Service's contact information that protects a pet owner's privacy during the time it takes to return lost pets to owners.

When the Toronto Animal Service center receives a lost pet, they link the pet's licensing tag information to the contact information the pet owner provides at the time they purchase a pet license. In addition to ensuring pet owners are reunited with their pets as quickly as possible, licensing your pet provides funds to support programs operated by the Toronto Animal Services. One program involves helping homeless pets find forever homes through pet adoption campaigns. Other programs include spay/neuter, medical care and providing food to stray dogs and cats.

What Happens to Pet Owners with Unlicensed Pets?

If you lose an unlicensed pet and it is found by law enforcement, you could be issued a $240 ticket before you can reclaim your pet. The maximum fine for having unlicensed pets in Toronto is $5000. Also remember, pets must be re-licensed every year. Pet licenses expire 12 months from the date they are purchased.
